How to Match a Charger to a LiFePO₄ Traction Battery

Check LiFePO₄ charger compatibility using cell count, charge profile, temperature limits, BMS signaling, connectors and state-of-charge display.

Read the pack’s charging conditions

Confirm cell chemistry, series count, maximum charging voltage, allowed current, temperature window and termination conditions. Chargers sold for the same nominal platform can implement different profiles. Delta-Q’s guidance distinguishes algorithms by battery requirements. Obtain pack supplier approval for the charger model and programmed profile.

Verify connectors and interlocks

Check connector pinout, polarity, current rating and signal definitions. Record the firmware or profile version. For CAN control, verify that the charger follows BMS limits and handles stop, timeout and wakeup. For a fixed profile, confirm termination and fault handling. Check the vehicle’s drive inhibit during charging.

Understand the voltage and state-of-charge relationship

LiFePO₄ open-circuit voltage changes relatively little across a substantial portion of the state-of-charge range. Loaded terminal voltage also depends on current and temperature. If the vehicle displays a percentage, verify gauge or BMS behavior under representative load, after charging and after rest.

Document a complete charge cycle

At agreed starting temperature and state of charge, record voltage, current, charge time, termination and faults. Use the approved test procedure for temperature limits, power recovery and communication loss. List the verified pack, BMS, charger profile and wiring versions in the release record.
