48 V Golf Cart Lithium Retrofit: A Compatibility Checklist

A lead-acid to lithium retrofit checklist for 48 V golf carts covering the voltage window, tray and harness, charger profile, state-of-charge display and regenerative braking.

Record the vehicle and controller first

A cart model can use different controllers, harnesses or charge interlocks across model years. Record the chassis plate, controller part number, original battery arrangement and charger label. Measure clear tray space, mounting locations, connector orientation and cable bend allowance. Trojan’s public bundle guide lists vehicle fit, mounting, charger, gauge and wiring separately, illustrating the scope of a compatibility check.

Compare three electrical conditions

Ask for the pack’s full-charge voltage, normal operating window and protection thresholds. Check the controller and DC-DC converter for upper voltage limits and low voltage under load. For carts with regenerative braking, verify what happens near full charge. The vehicle team should validate warnings or torque reduction ahead of a pack protection cutoff.

Match the charger and dashboard

Record the charger model, programmed profile and connector pinout. Lead-acid profiles may include finish or equalization stages. Use a profile approved for the new pack. If the original gauge estimates charge from voltage, evaluate a validated gauge or BMS state-of-charge data. Verify the vehicle’s drive inhibit during charging.

Use a representative fleet route

Log battery-side current, pack voltage, temperature and remaining energy on a loaded start, a typical grade and the return trip at the end of a shift. In a controlled test, verify charge termination, limited regen and fault behavior. Record the controller and charger versions so later batches can be checked against the same setup.
